Chris Kaman has agreed to a two-year, $9.8 million contract with the Portland Trail Blazers, sources told Yahoo! Sports on Friday.
Kaman, a 2010 NBA All-Star, played for the Los Angeles Lakers last season and averaged 10.4 points and 5.9 rebounds in just 18.9 minutes per game, though he shot 50.9 percent from the field.
Kaman knows Blazers general manager Neil Olshey, who coached the 32-year-old center while he was with the Los Angeles Clippers. The Blazers also targeted Channing Frye and Spencer Hawes before reaching an agreement with Kaman, as they were looking for a 7-foot backup for Robin Lopez, according to Yahoo! Sports.
Kaman has averaged 11.7 points and 7.9 rebounds per game over his career with the Clippers, New Orleans Hornets, Dallas Mavericks and Lakers. He averaged 18.5 points and 9.3 rebounds per game in 2009-10.
Kaman’s signing means the Lakers will have to go shopping for another center, unless they’re able to re-sign unrestricted free agent Pau Gasol. If Gasol goes elsewhere, Robert Sacre will be the only center on their roster.
