One minor league baseball fan took matters into his own hands Sunday after seeing one of his batters hit by a pitch.
The Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks were blowing out the Midland RockHounds when RockHounds reliever Blake Hassebrock drilled Hooks first baseman Telvin Nash in the back. Nash trotted to first without any incident, but as he did, one (highly intoxicated) man jumped out of the stands to confront Hassebrock at the mound.
The fan was leveled by Midland shortstop Dusty Coleman before he could throw any punches, but he popped right up and continued jawing until he was escorted off the field by the umpires and a member of the Hooks’ coaching staff.
The man, an unidentified 35-year-old Houston native, was arrested on suspicion of public intoxication and criminal trespass at a sporting event, a law enforcement source told the Corpus Christi Caller Times.
“I saw (the fan) out of the corner of my eye and I honestly thought it was someone from their dugout, like a trainer, going to see Nash,” Hassebrock said, via the Caller Times. “Then I realized when he was halfway between the (foul) line and the mound, that he was a fan. My first thought was I just hoped he didn’t have a gun or something weird. If he’s crazy enough to be on the field, who knows what he had on him. By the time he got to me, he stopped and it looked like he came to and regretted being out there in the first place. We didn’t (make contact).
“This was something out of ‘Eastbound and Down.’ (What he said) was pretty much inaudible, drunken gibberish. (There was) a couple of f-bombs and some slurring. I’m pretty sure he was upset I hit Nash.“
The Hooks, who led 9-0 at the time of the incident, went on to rout the RockHounds 14-1 for their eighth straight win.
