BOSTON — The Red Sox continue to press on with the same foundation intact.
While the Red Sox could make moves — either buying or selling — before the July 31 trade deadline, manager John Farrell noted Wednesday that his attention remains on the club’s current roster as Boston looks to dig its way out of a major hole.
“I don’t know that we’re going to make wholesale changes with personnel. That’s not in the cards,” Farrell said before Wednesday’s game against the Chicago Cubs at Fenway Park. “My answer remains fairly consistent, and that is: We continue to create opportunities for ourselves. The elusive base hit is the difference.”
The Red Sox’s offense has been brutal this season. Boston entered Wednesday’s contest with the fewest runs scored in the American League (312), the second-worst average (.241) and the worst OPS (.684). The Red Sox already called up Mookie Betts over the weekend in the hopes of adding a spark, but the club remains stuck in the mud.
“We’re not going to look to become a speed-oriented team overnight. That’s not available to us,” Farrell said. “We have to stay with a consistent, relentless approach that these guys have done and have a long track record of.”
Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said over the weekend in New York that his focus remains on 2014 and adding to the current group. He also acknowledged things can change, however, so it would be wise to stay tuned.
