BOSTON — Jon Lester has spent his entire nine-year career with the Red Sox. His next start could come in a different uniform.

Lester, who has been the subject of trade rumors in recent days, has been scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday against the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park, according to Red Sox manager John Farrell. Brandon Workman will be called up and start in Lester’s place.

“In light of all the uncertainty surrounding Jon Lester, it’s probably in everyone’s best interest that he does not make that start,” Farrell said after Tuesday’s game.

Farrell did not announce a corresponding roster move for Workman’s recall. Lester also was unavailable for comment after the game.
