Jose Abreu has been one of the most impressive rookies in the major leagues through 81 games this season.
On Tuesday, his parents will finally get the chance to see why.
The Chicago White Sox slugger will appear in his first MLB All-Star game on Tuesday night at Target Field after launching a league-best 29 home runs so far this season.
Abreu’s parents, Jose Oriol Abreu and Daysi Correa, will be on hand in Minneapolis to watch their son play for the first time on American soil.
“Seeing him play tomorrow is going to be the realization of so many years of hard work, so much dedication,” Abreu’s father said Monday through a translator, via the Chicago Sun Times. “It’s going to be like we’re going to a big party. We’re witnessing this great thing. The dream we had for him is coming true.”
Abreu’s parents moved to the United States from Cuba just two months ago and have yet to see their son play in a big-league game. Abreu, who played in Cuba for six years before defecting to the U.S. in 2013, is equally excited for the special moment.
“I’m proud I get to share this with her,” Abreu said of his mother through a translator, via the Chicago Tribune. “She woke up this morning with so much energy, and so proud of herself. I tell her I’m not just in this All-Star Game by myself. You’re in this All-Star Game next to me. Every day, what I do at the ballpark, the work I put in, it’s for my family.”
