Less than a month after disease struck Lou Gehrig, ending his 2,130 games played streak, the New York Yankees first baseman took the microphone in the middle of Yankee Stadium to deliver one of the most memorable sports speeches of all time.
Gehrig’s speech was honored before the Yankees’ game against the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday, kicking off a league-wide effort to spread awareness and raise research funds for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
Gehrig joins plenty of sports figures who delivered unforgettable speeches. These speeches inspire many people beyond the world of sports, proving once and for all that sports can be more than just a game.
