When Manny Ramirez signed a minor league contract with the Chicago Cubs in May, there’s a reason he signed on as a player and a coach.
The 42-year-old proved that point Monday night, launching a two-run homer to straightaway center to help the Iowa Cubs beat the Omaha Storm Chasers 7-6.

Manny’s blast came in just his second Triple-A game since joining the team last Thursday.
Ramirez has not played in Major League Baseball since 2011, when he retired after being suspended a second time for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy.
For all of the controversy that seems to follow the former Boston Red Sox outfielder, though, Ramirez always has been one of the best pure hitters in the game, and he proved Monday night that he still can hit with the best of them.
