MLB Trade Deadline Live: Red Sox Among Busiest Teams As Part Of Wild Deadline Day

by

Jul 31, 2014

Jon Lester, Ben CheringtonIt’s (probably) safe to say the Major League Baseball non-waiver trade deadline and all of its madness has come and gone for the day — and what a day it was.

This was one of the craziest trade deadlines in recent memory, with two of the game’s elite left-handed starting pitchers — Jon Lester and David Price — being dealt in potentially league-altering blockbusters.

Get caught up with all of the day’s action in the live blog below. You also can check out NESN.com’s MLB trade deadline page, as well as NESN.com/RedSox, for more news, opinion and analysis as we start to pick up the pieces after an insane day of baseball moves.

6:29 p.m.: Closing the book on some deals, as details come out after the deadline.

The Cubs received Single-A catcher Victor Caratini in the deal with the Braves.

The Marlins sent three prospects and a 2015 competitive balance pick to the Astros for Jarred Cosart, utility man Kiké Hernandez and outfielder Austin Wates.

The Diamondbacks received minor league catcher Peter O’Brien, the Yankees’ ninth-ranked prospect, and a player to be named or cash in the Martin Prado trade.

The Indians received utility infielder Zach Walters from the Nationals in the Asdrubal Cabrera trade.

4:27 p.m.: The Cubs and Braves also made a deal before the deadline. The Cubs will send reliever James Russell and outfielder Emilio Bonifacio to Atlanta. It’s still unknown what’s heading to Chicago.

2:10 p.m.: The Yankees have claimed pitcher Esmil Rogers off waivers from the Blue Jays, according to Jack Curry of YES.

[tweet https://twitter.com/Joelsherman1/status/494877860046589952 align=’center’]

It wouldn’t be a huge splash for anyone, but the 34-year-old could help off the bench.

12:03 p.m.: Teams always are looking for left-handed relief help, and the Red Sox have arguably the best on the market. There’s reportedly plenty of interest in Andrew Miller.

9:45 a.m.: Jon Lester has a new team, and it sounds like he’s headed to the Oakland Athletics. It’s a blockbuster, too. According to multiple reports, Lester and outfielder Jonny Gomes are heading to Oakland in exchange for A’s outfielder Yoenis Cespedes.

9:05 a.m.: The Oakland A’s already made a big splash this trade season when they acquired Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel from the Chicago Cubs for some high-level prospects. Could they also be gearing up for a run at Jon Lester? ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick thinks it makes some sense.

8:18 a.m.: From late, late Wednesday night on the Jon Lester front:

[tweet https://twitter.com/Ken_Rosenthal/status/494693106907090945 align=’center’]

How much interest the Dodgers have at this point really is unknown. MLB insider Peter Gammons just said on WEEI radio in Boston that the Dodgers are out on Lester and might be turning their attention elsewhere.

But … that can always change in a hurry.

8:05 a.m.: Here’s a quick roundup of everything going on as we reset from Wednesday into Thursday.

— Here are NESN.com Red Sox beat writer Ricky Doyle’s trade deadline notes from Wednesday night.

— Orioles general manager Dan Duquette downplayed any sort of Jon Lester rumors.

— A look at how the Red Sox’s trade on Wednesday — sending Felix Doubront to the Cubs virtually for nothing — could benefit both teams.

— Elsewhere across the Internet, Sports on Earth has a look at some of the biggest deadline deals in the last 20 years.

8 a.m.: The Major League Baseball trade deadline is upon us, and it sure feels like a lot is about to happen.

The non-waiver deadline is set for 4 p.m. Thursday, and if Wednesday was any indication, it’ll be a pretty hectic day. The biggest name traded Wednesday was Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Justin Masterson, who was shipped to the St. Louis Cardinals, but there was no shortage of rumors throughout the day and into the night.

A lot of those rumors centered around Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Jon Lester. The big left-hander is in the final year of his contract, and both sides have broken off talks on a long-term contract extension. The Red Sox also are out of contention, so the logical move seems to be to trade Lester. The southpaw was scratched from his Wednesday night start against the Toronto Blue Jays with trade rumors swirling. One team that started to pop up in connection to Lester on Wednesday afternoon was the Baltimore Orioles. Nothing came of that, but we’ll have to see if the seeds were planted for a potential Thursday deal.

Lester is far from the only Red Sox player who could be on the move. Starting pitcher John Lackey had his name come up in rumors, as has Boston relievers such as Andrew Miller and Koji Uehara. Boston manager John Farrell stressed Wednesday that any sort of “rebuild” would be geared toward competing right away in 2015, so it will be interesting to see what the club does not only Thursday but into the offseason, especially if they’re able to secure a haul of prospects before the deadline.

Ben Cherington won’t be the only GM burning up the phone lines. There’s likely to be plenty of talk in Tampa Bay, where the Rays have a big decision to make about left-handed ace David Price. The All-Star made his regular turn Wednesday, and the Rays likely still see themselves in contention. However, there were reports Wednesday that indicated the Rays still would be interested in trading Price if they found the right deal. Of course, the right deal could be a king’s ransom, but a lot of attention certainly will be paid to what the Rays do Thursday.

Be sure to follow along all day right here as we’ll be live-blogging updates throughout the day.
