Nick LonghiNick Longhi’s first full season in the Boston Red Sox organization has come to a screeching halt.

Longhi, who was selected in the 30th round of the 2013 draft, has had a big season at Single-A Lowell. Unfortunately, the 18-year-old will miss the remainder of the 2014 campaign after undergoing season-ending surgery Thursday to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his thumb.

Longhi suffered the injury Monday while sliding into third base. It’s unclear how long he’ll be sidelined and whether the injury will prevent Longhi from participating in the fall instructional league, but it’s certainly a devastating blow for the outfielder/first baseman.

Longhi hit .330 (36-for-109) with 10 RBIs, 11 extra-base hits, a .338 on-base percentage and a .829 OPS in 30 games for the Spinners before going down with the injury. His average was the fourth-best mark in the New York-Penn League, further showing why he was considered one of the purest hitters in the 2013 draft class.

Longhi, a native of Venice, Fla., is a lifelong Red Sox fan, having been raised by a family of Massachusetts natives who loved Boston sports.
