Patrice Bergeron is one of the best players in the NHL, a claim supported by his Selke Trophy win at last month’s league awards show. He’s also a star off the ice and in the community, something that will be recognized in two months.
The Boston Bruins forward will be honored by The Sports Museum with the Community Service Award at “The Tradition” on Sept. 17 at TD Garden. The award actually will be the second off-ice honor Bergeron has received this offseason, as he was presented with the NHL Foundation Award for personifying “the core values of ice hockey — commitment, perseverance and teamwork — to enrich the lives of people in his community.”
Bergeron’s work in the community is matched by few. His charity, “Patrice’s Pals,” allows children from local hospitals and other organizations to attend Bruins games and sit in a luxury suite before meeting Bergeron after the game. Bergeron’s charitable work extends far beyond his own charities, as he also has done volunteer work for multiple charities in and around Boston.
Other honorees at “The Tradition” will be former New England Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi, former Boston Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield, Olympic judo champion Kayla Harrison and Olympic medalist skier Bode Miller.
