Nate Byham, Miles Burris, Rolando McClain, Philip WheelerFOXBORO, Mass. — Tight end Nate Byham’s tenure with the New England Patriots lasted less than a week.

The fifth-year pro was released by the Patriots on Friday, the team announced. Byham lasted just two training camp sessions before being cut.

Byham’s release opens a spot on the Patriots’ 90-man roster. They could look to add another wide receiver after Greg Orton went down with an injury during Friday’s practice.

Byham was signed Sunday by the Patriots. He originally was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the sixth round of the 2010 NFL draft.

The Patriots are left with Rob Gronkowski, Michael Hoomanawanui, D.J. Williams, Justin Jones, Asa Watson and James Develin at tight end.
