Left-hander Henry Owens, one of the top Boston Red Sox’s prospects, started for the U.S. team in the 2014 All-Star Futures Game and put forth a solid performance.
Owens tossed a scoreless inning at Target Field in Minneapolis, allowing one hit and striking out one on 19 pitches. While the 21-year-old’s control wasn’t 100 percent, he still showed off three nice pitches: a 90-92 mph fastball, a 78-80 mph changeup and a 70-73 mph breaking ball.
Second baseman Sean Coyle, Boston’s other representative, went 0-for-2 on a flyout and a popout. Both Coyle and Owens play for the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs.
Coyle was a recent addition to the Futures Game as he replaced Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts after his call-up to the majors. Red Sox catcher Christian Vazquez was also originally on the World roster before his call to The Show.
Team USA won the game 3-2 over the World team, and Texas Rangers prospect Joey Gallo was named Futures Game MVP. Gallo launched a 419-foot, two-run bomb in the sixth to put the U.S. ahead.
