The Boston Celtics’ interest in being involved in a trade for Kevin Love is no news flash. But the Celtics might be interested in taking part in a Love deal even if it doesn’t end up putting the All-Star power forward in Boston.
The Celtics are one of several teams looking to take part in a three-team trade that would send Love to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Sean Deveney of the Sporting News reported Wednesday, citing front-office sources. Their preference remains acquiring Love themselves, but they would reportedly deal some of their draft picks for a player “who can contribute immediately.”
The Philadelphia 76ers and Denver Nuggets are also looking to scavenge some benefit while facilitating Love’s move, according to Deveney. (Both teams were involved in the trade that sent Dwight Howard to the Houston Rockets two summers ago.) If the Celtics do wriggle their way into a multiple-team trade with the Cavs and Minnesota Timberwolves, it would be the second time this offseason they were involved in a deal that enabled Cleveland to obtain a star.
By entering into a trade between the Cavs and Brooklyn Nets in early July, the Celtics helped the Cavs clear enough salary cap space to offer LeBron James a maximum contract.
