All week long, golf fans at Royal Liverpool cheered loudly for Rory McIlroy. The 25-year-old superstar rewarded those cheers with a sensational performance that led to McIlroy winning the British Open for the first time in his young carer on Sunday.

The Northern Ireland native was further showered in praise shortly after capturing the third grand slam title of his career as he was presented with the Claret Jug in a post-round trophy presentation. As is custom, McIlroy was given the trophy and then asked to say a few words.

McIlroy used it a chance to thank everyone involved with the tournament, including the fans who cheered him all week. Good idea, of course, until McIlroy decided to casually mention the fact that he’s a Manchester United fan. Doing so in front of a crowd watching a tournament at a golf club that literally has Liverpool in the name, is not a great idea.

The best part of the interaction is when McIlroy realizes just how bad his idea was and quickly tries to redeem himself. The loyal Liverpool supporters quickly got over it, though, as the cheers returned shortly thereafter as part of the lengthy and hearty celebration.
