Germany destroyed Brazil 7-1 on Tuesday in the worst loss by a host nation in tournament history. The Germans will play the winner of the Argentina-Netherlands semifinal contest in Sunday’s World Cup final. They haven’t won the World Cup since 1990, when Klinsmann played a key role as a midfielder.

Klinsmann was Germany’s head coach at the 2006 World Cup, where the host nation lost in the semifinals to Italy. Current German manager Joachim Low was one of Klinsmann’s assistants then, and he’s looking for his first World Cup title after leading the team to back-to-back semifinal appearances.

American soccer fans should be encouraged that their team played Germany tough during the group stage in a 1-0 defeat. With Klinsmann at the helm, United States soccer should see incredible improvement over the next four years.
