Boston Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks went on the disabled list May 17 with a fractured finger, and he hasn’t seen action in the major leagues since.

On Wednesday, however, the 25-year-old showed off some power that Red Sox fans hoped to see heading into this season, as he belted his first home run since beginning his rehab assignment with the Pawtucket Red Sox.

Middlebrooks was the Triple-A team’s designated hitter Wednesday, and took Rochester Red Wings left-hander Sean Gilmartin deep to left field in the fifth inning on a line drive that quickly got out of the ballpark.

Middlebrooks is 8-for-35 with three walks in 11 games with the PawSox.
