Cespedes was acquired from the Athletics before Thursday’s non-waiver trade deadline in a multi-player deal that sent Red Sox starting pitcher Jon Lester and outfielder Jonny Gomes to Oakland. Boston also acquired a draft pick in the trade.

The 28-year-old outfielder should provide the Red Sox with much-needed power hitting from the corner outfield spots. Boston ranks 25th in the majors in runs scored, 20th in batting average and 23rd in slugging percentage.

Cespedes is batting .256 with 17 home runs, 67 RBI, a .303 on-base percentage and 62 runs in 101 games this season. As a right-handed hitter, he should have a lot of success at Fenway Park.
