BOSTON — The Red Sox swapped out a few faces before Wednesday night’s game against the Los Angeles Angels at Fenway Park.
Catcher David Ross and outfielder/first baseman Alex Hassan are back with the Red Sox. Catcher Dan Butler and right-handed pitcher Steven Wright have been optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket.
Ross, who had been battling a foot injury, was activated from the 15-day disabled list. Butler was shipped out in a corresponding roster move after appearing in three games with Boston during his first major league stint. Butler, who turns 28 in October, went hitless in 11 at-bats.
Hassan, a native of Milton, Mass., received his first major league call-up earlier this season, and the 26-year-old went 1-for-7 with a walk in two games with Boston. Hassan was hitting .282 with eight homers and 50 RBIs in 104 games with Pawtucket while mostly playing the outfield.
The Red Sox had been carrying 13 pitchers. However, third baseman Will Middlebrooks currently is day to day with right hamstring tightness, and first baseman Mike Napoli arrived at the ballpark Wednesday with back spasms, so the team decided to send down Wright in favor of an extra position player. Wright allowed one run on four hits over four innings Sunday in his lone appearance with Boston.
