BOSTON — Once the shock of Garrett Richards’ freak injury wore off, it was almost as sobering to consider what it could mean to the Los Angeles Angels’ season.
Richards went down awkwardly while trying to cover first base in the bottom of the second inning Wednesday night at Fenway Park. Replays appeared to show a knee injury, although the specific nature of the injury was not immediately known.
Richards spent about 10 minutes on the ground near first base while he was being attended to.
Richards was carted off the field, and with him might have went the Angels’ pennant hopes. The 26-year-old right-hander had developed into a certified ace for the Angels, who entered the game with a one-game lead over the Oakland A’s for first place in the American League West. He is 13-4 with a 2.61 earned run average.
UPDATE, 8:54 p.m.: Team officials are calling Richards’ injury a left knee patellar injury. The extent of the damage won’t be known until he is fully examined.
