Rookie right-hander Anthony Ranaudo will get the call Friday night as the Boston Red Sox open up a series with the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Red Sox announced Thursday that Ranaudo will be recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket to fill the rotation spot vacated when Brandon Workman was optioned last weekend.
It will be the third career major league start for Ranaudo, who Wednesday was named the Most Valuable Pitcher of the Triple-A International League. The 24-year-old boasts a 14-4 record with a 2.61 ERA in 24 starts with the PawSox this season.
Ranaudo picked up the win in each of his first two stats with the Red Sox, allowing a total of six runs on 12 hits over 12 innings in games against the New York Yankees and Cincinnati Reds. His most recent outing came on Aug. 13.
