Shawn Thornton was a great teammate on the Boston Bruins, but with enforcers in hockey becoming less necessary, the Bruins ultimately decided not to re-sign him after the 2013-14 season.
Thornton didn’t have trouble finding a new home with the Florida Panthers, but he has plenty of now former teammates who will miss his presence after he spent seven seasons on the TD Garden ice.
“It’s something that’s going to be an adjustment at first, but, you know, we’re going to move on eventually,” linemate Daniel Paille said at Thornton’s annual Putts and Punches for Parkinson’s charity golf tournament. “But he has a presence in the room that I think we will all miss. But I still hang out with him in the summers and stuff, so the friendship’s still there.”
Thornton even added a little extra assurance that he’d remain friends with his old teammates.
“Tuukka (Rask) didn’t buy me out of my half of the boat, so I think we’re still friends,” Thornton joked. “I think we’ll still hang out.”
