Boston Celtics forward Jeff Green gave back to his alma mater in a big way Thursday.
Green, who played three seasons at Georgetown University from 2004 to 2007, donated $1 million to assist in the school’s construction of a new, $62 million athletic facility.
“First and foremost, (Georgetown) gave me an opportunity to pursue my dream of getting to the NBA,” Green said, via The Washington Post. “I mean, the environment was amazing. The facility is going to give players the opportunity to get better, and the future recruits Georgetown is bringing in, it will give them a chance to see one of the best facilities in the country probably.”
The facility will bear the name of legendary Hoyas coach John Thompson Jr., whose son, John Thompson III, took over coaching duties before Green’s freshman year.
“I think it speaks to what they feel about this institution and to this program,” Thompson III said of the alumni donations the project has received. “Speaking of those two specifically, I think that they understand and want to do everything they can to make sure that the players in the future, athletes in the future, have an opportunity to have a top-of-the-line, world-class environment to get better, to work.”
Former Georgetown and New York Knicks star Patrick Ewing also teamed with agent David Falk to make a $3.3 million contribution earlier this week.
