Kimmo Timonen’s NHL career appears to be in jeopardy.
The Philadelphia Flyers defenseman has been diagnosed with blood clots in his lower right leg and both of his lungs, the team revealed Tuesday. According to the Flyers, Timmonen is being treated in his home country of Finland, and there’s no timetable for a potential return.
The 39-year-old signed a one-year contract in June to remain with the Flyers. He was set to make a base salary of $2 million and had built-in bonuses for reaching games played milestones during the 2014-15 season.

Timonen has been a workhorse for much of his career, playing in at least 72 games in every non-lockout season since 2000-01. He scored six goals and added 29 assists in 77 games last season while averaging 20:20 of ice time per game.
