Saturday’s trade between the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles marked a return to the majors for infielder/outfielder Jemile Weeks.
Weeks, a first-round pick in 2008 (12th overall), played in only three big league games with the Orioles this season, spending much of the year at Triple-A Norfolk. The 27-year-old has been added to the Red Sox’s active major league roster, though, and he’ll wear No. 7 with his new club.
Weeks was acquired from the O’s along with minor league infielder Ivan De Jesus Jr. in exchange for infielder/outfielder Kelly Johnson and minor league third baseman Michael Almanzar. Weeks joined the Orioles over the offseason in the trade that sent then-closer Jim Johnson to the Oakland Athletics.
Weeks, who was once a highly regarded prospect in the A’s system, hasn’t lived up to his lofty expectations. He’s a switch-hitter with some speed and on-base ability, though, so he could bring a little something to the table.
Weeks, a career .259 hitter (225-for-870) in 226 major league games, hit .303 (71-for-234) with a .411 on-base percentage and 10 stolen bases this season in 71 games split between Triple-A (63 games), Low-A (three games) and Rookie Ball (five games). He hasn’t appeared in a major league game since May 1.
Weeks is the third Red Sox player to don No. 7 this season. Johnson and Stephen Drew previously sported the number.
