Anthony Ranaudo picked up the win against the New York Yankees in his major league debut, but the rookie right-handed pitcher was quickly optioned back to the minors after his first start. He’s about to get his second shot in the show.
Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell said Tuesday on MLB Network Radio that Ranaudo will be recalled and will start on Wednesday against the Cincinnati Reds. In order to make room for Ranaudo on the roster, Farell revealed the Sox will option Edwin Escobar back to Triple-A. Ranaudo will take Brandon Workman’s spot in the rotation, as the Sox will skip Workman this time through.
The 24-year-old Ranaudo made his first-career start on Aug. 1 against the Yankees. He picked up the win after going six innings and giving up two runs on four hits. He walked four and struck out two while throwing 91 pitches in the winning effort.
Workman likely could use the rest. He started last Thursday against the St. Louis Cardinals and worked into the sixth inning. He was then called upon to pitch relief on Saturday night in Anaheim where he allowed a walkoff home run to Albert Pujols in Boston’s 19-inning loss to the Angels.
