Johnny ManzielJohnny Manziel is usually fullĀ of confidence, but he still understands that he’s only a rookie.

Manziel spoke to reporters on Saturday before Monday’s preseason game against the Washington Redskins and told them that he understands he has a lot to learn if he’s going to be the Cleveland Browns’ Week 1 starter.

”I don’t think I’m ready for (the) Pittsburgh (Steelers) right now,” Manziel said, via Yahoo! Sports.

The Browns plan on announcing aĀ starter for their their preseason game on Tuesday, while both Brian Hoyer and Johnny Football will share the same amount of playing time at FedEx Field Monday, according to Browns coach Mike Pettine.

Despite his humility, theĀ 2012 Heisman Trophy winner did point out that he feels like he’s progressing, and that there’s always room to improve before the regular season.

“I’ve only played one game, but the more and more you see it, the more you get familiar with it, the better it will be,” Manziel said.

Reports from Friday indicated that the Browns don’t want Manziel to start against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1 of the regular season, even though he played well in his preseason debut.

Manziel completed seven of 11 passes for 63 yards while rushing for a team-best 27 yards in the first NFL action of his career, drawing the highest preseason game television rating in NFL Network history.

Should the Browns choose to start Hoyer Week 1 against Pittsburgh, some believe they will also let Manziel watch from the sidelines against the New Orleans Saints and Baltimore Ravens in Week 2 and Week 3, respectively.

Avoiding those tough games early in the season could be the best thing for Manziel.
