So much for the Major League Baseball trade deadline losing its luster.
The 2014 deadline will go down as one of the craziest ever. That’s not an exaggeration, either.
The MLB non-waiver trade deadline seemed a bit watered down in recent years, with the most important deals not necessarily being the most interesting moves to casual baseball fans. This year was different, however, in that a few big names changed teams.
Two legitimate aces, Jon Lester and David Price, were traded to the Oakland Athletics and Detroit Tigers, respectively. In other words, they were dealt to contenders from teams underachieving one year after making the postseason.
Lester’s former team, the defending World Series champion Boston Red Sox, went ballistic on the trade market Thursday, executing four deals involving 11 players before the 4 p.m. ET deadline. Even crazier was that Boston acquired major league talent rather than prospects, showing a clear-cut desire to contend in 2015.
