Whatever you do, don’t besmirch the good name of Fred Flintstone, one newspaper reader is telling one of the country’s major papers.
The controversy surrounding Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice has been covered from just about every angle after he was suspended two games for allegedly knocking his now-wife unconscious. He’s been criticized by many, but a Washington Post reader took exception to what he thought was an unfair comparison. He wasn’t upset that Rice was being criticized, though. It was who Rice was being compared to that had Martin Kramer up in arms.
Post columnist Sally Jenkins wrote Tuesday that she was upset Rice only received a two-game suspension after “going all Flintstone on his wife.” This greatly upset Kramer, who did what any concerned citizen would do: He wrote a letter to the editor.
“As any fan of that venerable show (“The Flintstones”) would tell you, Fred Flintstone had his faults, but he loved and respected his wife, Wilma, often referring to her as his queen,” Kramer wrote.
The letter, titled “Giving cavemen a good name,” didn’t stop there.
“What Mr. Rice did could perhaps qualify as a stereotype of cavemen behavior, Ms. Jenkins, but yabba dabba don’t lump Fred Flintstone in with that type of behavior.”
