Kevin Durant’s wallet is about to get a whole lot fatter.
Durant, one of the NBA’s most popular and marketable players, has been offered a 10-year contract by Under Armour worth between $265 million and $285 million, sources told ESPN’s Darren Rovell on Wednesday.
The reported deal “includes Under Armour stock and other incentives, such a community center built in his mother’s name,” according to Rovell.
The Oklahoma City Thunder star has been a Nike spokesman since entering the league in 2007. Under Durant’s current contract, Nike has the right to match the Under Armour deal.
Bringing in Durant would be a huge get for Under Armour, which has grown into a sports apparel giant but is dwarfed by Nike and adidas in the basketball world. Of the company’s $3 billion in projected revenue this year, only 1 percent will come from the sale of basketball shoes, per Rovell. Under Armour does have the advantage, however, of having its headquarters located in Maryland, just a short drive from Durant’s hometown.
Durant, the reigning NBA Most Valuable Player, led the league in scoring last season with 32.0 points per game on 50.3 percent shooting. His line of Nike shoes and apparel raked in roughly $175 million in revenue last season, according to Rovell.
