It remains a mystery who will take over for Sam Bradford as the St. Louis Rams’ permanent starting quarterback, but the latest report indicates that it likely will not be Mark Sanchez.
There is “no chance” the quarterback wants to leave his new job as Nick Foles’ backup with the Philadelphia Eagles to pursue a starting spot in St. Louis, a “person with knowledge of Sanchez’s thinking” told USA Today on Sunday.
Sanchez’s was one of the first names mentioned when news broke that Bradford will miss the entirety of this season after again tearing his ACL. Sanchez has little chance to start in Philadelphia — Foles is coming off a breakout, Pro Bowl campaign — and he has experience running Rams offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer’s offense after playing in it for three seasons with the New York Jets.
Sanchez has looked much more comfortable operating in Eagles coach Chip Kelly’s more wide-open scheme, though, and as a result has put together a very solid preseason. Through three exhibition games, the 27-year-old has completed 25 of 31 passes for 281 yards and two touchdowns.
Rams coach Jeff Fisher hasn’t discussed the possibility of trading for a new signal-caller, saying over the weekend that 34-year-old Shaun Hill will be the team’s starter until further notice. Hill, who signed a one-year contract with St. Louis in March, hasn’t started a regular-season game since 2010.
