Miguel Tejada’s career in Major League Baseball could be over.
The Miami Marlins released the former six-time All-Star shortstop, the Sun-Sentinel reported on Saturday afternoon. Tejada had played in 14 games with Miami’s Double-A affiliate in Jacksonville, collecting five hits in 14 plate appearances.
The 40-year-old infielder burst onto the scene in the early 2000s with the Oakland Athletics. He compiled 34 home runs and 131 RBIs during his incredible 2002 MVP season with Oakland.
Each season from 1999 to 2006, Tejada had at least 21 homers and 80 RBIs, some of the best numbers put up by a shortstop. He also led the league with 150 RBIs in 2004 while playing for the Baltimore Orioles.
Tejada’s career began to see a downturn in performance after the 2010 season. He played in a combined 144 games from 2011 through 2013, missing all of the 2012 campaign. Tejada did not play in a Major League game this season.
“I was excited, but I couldn’t overcome the injuries,” Tejada said, via ESPN Deportes. “I’m very grateful for the opportunity the Marlins gave me. I feel indebted to them. I was close to returning to the field, but I understand the Marlins’ decision.”
Tejada turned 40 in May.
