Rusney CastilloThe Boston Red Sox are making a strong push for one of the more sought-after Cuban prospects.

FOX Sports reporter Ken Rosenthal reported Tuesday night that the Red Sox are one of three teams in the running to sign Cuban free agent Rusney Castillo. According to Rosenthal, the Detroit Tigers are San Francisco Giants are also in the mix for the outfielder.

However, that report came about three hours after ESPN reporter Buster Olney indicated that the Chicago Cubs actually might be the front-runner to sign Castillo.

The 27-year-old Cuban defector is expected to be a potential game-changing type of talent. He’s not huge — just 5-foot-9 and 205 pounds — but he has some undeniable tools. He runs very well and has the potential to show some power, too.

Castillo was fairly impressive during an open showcase in Miami late last month.
