Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki will undergo labral repair surgery on his left hip Friday, and won’t play again in 2014, according to Thomas Harding of MLB.com.
Tulowitzki entered Wednesday with a National League-leading .340 batting average, 16 points higher than teammate Justin Morneau in second place. The 29-year-old superstar also has hit 21 home runs with 52 RBI and a .432 on-base percentage, which made him a candidate for the NL MVP award before his injury.
Failing to play a full campaign is nothing new for Tulowitzki, who hasn’t played in more than 150 games during a single season since 2009. He’s missed more than 150 games over the last three years because of various injuries.
The Rockies sit at the bottom of the NL West Division with a record of 46-74, 22 games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers.
