Three New York Yankees players reportedly have cleared waivers.
Left fielder Brett Gardner, infielder/outfielder Martin Prado and shortstop/second baseman Stephen Drew all passed through waivers unclaimed and now are eligible to be traded to any team, sources told CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman on Tuesday.
However, Heyman expects all three players to stick around the Bronx as the Yankees remain in contention in the American League East.
Gardner is set to begin a four-year, $52 million contract extension next season that includes a club option for 2019. Drew and Prado, both of whom were acquired Thursday ahead of the Major League Baseball non-waiver trade deadline, will hit free agency this fall.
All three players started each game of a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox over the weekend. Drew tallied two hits and four RBIs in Sunday’s rubber match — an 8-7 win over his former team — and Gardner went 3-for-4, fell a triple short of the cycle and drove in three runs.
