Shane Victorino’s season is over.

The Boston Red Sox right fielder, who was placed on the disabled list Friday with back tightness, underwent season-ending surgery on said back Tuesday in Los Angeles.

The team announced the surgery around 12:30 p.m. Thursday, and Victorino tweeted a photo of himself in a hospital bed shortly after.

Back and hamstring injuries have plagued the 33-year-old this season, limiting him to just 30 games and requiring three separate DL stints. Victorino exited last Wednesday’s loss to the Toronto Blue Jays in the fifth inning, but manager John Farrell called the move “totally precautionary” at the time.

Victorino posted a .268/.303/.382 slash line with two home runs and 12 RBIs in his limited playing time this season. His shutdown opens up space in the Red Sox’s crowded outfield, which now includes Yoenis Cespedes and Allen Craig after the newcomers were acquired in deadline deals.
