Jimmy Garappolo took every snap at quarterback for the New England Patriots on Thursday, but Tom Brady’s night wasn’t entirely uneventful.
The quarterback entered the game for one play midway through the second quarter of the Patriots’ final preseason game, serving as the holder on a Stephen Gostkowski extra point.
Punter Ryan Allen normally handles the holding duties for New England, but Brady’s appearance likely was a product of Bill Belichick’s desire to be prepared for all situations.
We saw another example of that in the team’s third preseason game, when Belichick replaced Brady with backup (or, as it looks like now, third-stringer) Ryan Mallett for one series in the first quarter. Brady then re-entered the game and played well into the second half.
