England has a new captain, and it’s one of the biggest names in international soccer.
Wayne Rooney will lead England’s national team, it was announced Thursday, replacing Steven Gerrard, who is retiring from international play to focus on his Liverpool FC duties.
“To be named as the England captain is a dream come true for me personally and of course for my family,” Rooney said in an interview on his official website. “It is something I will take massive pride in doing.
“As a kid, I always loved the occasion of watching a big England game on the television. Back then, I had a burning ambition to play for my country. Now to be appointed captain is beyond my wildest dreams.”
Rooney and the entire England squad have their work cut out for them. They’re coming off a disappointing showing at this year’s World Cup, where they went winless and were eliminated before the knockout round for the first time in almost 50 years.
The Manchester United striker hopes he can help install confidence in the English fan base and carry the torch passed on from Gerrard.
“I intend to speak with Steven about different aspects of the role,” Rooney said. “We had a great relationship from the moment we played together for our country right up to our final game in Brazil. I am sure if I ever need to seek his advice he will be there to help.”
Rooney has 40 goals in 95 career international appearances with England.
