In 66 games as a shortstop this year, Xander Bogaerts has only made seven errors.
On Sunday though, he made a mistake that won’t go in the books as an error, but it essentially cost the Boston Red Sox the game against the Houston Astros.
The Sox were trailing 2-0 in the top of the second when Marwin Gonzalez hit a ground ball that should’ve been a double play, but Bogaerts released the ball from second to first before actually stepping on the base to get the force out.
The initial ruling on the field was a double play, but after the Astros challenged the call, the play was overturned and the inning continued.
After pitcher Joe Kelly walked the next batter, Jose Altuve hit a grand slam to blow the game open. The Astros went on to win the game, 8-1.
