Asmir Begovic didn’t celebrate when he scored a long-range goal on Nov. 2, 2013. The Stoke City goalkeeper now has little choice but to take a bow.
Begovic, 27, entered the Guinness Book of World Records on Thursday for scoring the longest goal in soccer history, Sky Sports reports.
Begovic scored the wind-assisted goal 13 seconds into his team’s Premier League 1-1 draw against Southampton. Begovic’s strike officially was measured at 301ft 6in, earning him a place in history.
“I feel amazing to be honoured in this way and as a goalkeeper I didn’t expect this to happen, not for this type of record anyway,” Begovic told Stoke City’s website, according to Sky Sports. “I will take it though and enjoy it.
“I really do appreciate this award and the certificate will certainly take pride of place on the wall at home.
“So thank you to everyone at Guinness World Records for presenting me with this wonderful award.”
Begovic’s acceptance of the Guiness accolade is a far cry from his reaction after scoring last November. Begovic declined to celebrate so as not to disrespect fellow goalkeeper Artur Boruc.
“It does not make a goalkeeper look good and after it I did not want to celebrate out of respect for him,” Begovic said at the time.
