The Carolina Panthers have deactivated Greg Hardy for Sunday’s home game against the Detroit Lions.
Although all signs pointed to the defensive end starting Sunday, the Panthers likely responded to the criticism the team was receiving in the wake of the Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson news.
Hardy was found guilty by a district judge in July of assaulting his ex-girlfriend and threatening to kill her during an altercation at his home in May. Hardy appealed the verdict, and is awaiting a jury trial that is scheduled for Nov. 17.
While many called for Hardy to sit, coach Ron Rivera was adamant that he would play against the Lions, saying that publicly just two days ago. However, the team ultimately decided to change their course of action regarding the Pro Bowler, who started in the team’s season opener.
The team is not expected to address the move, or Hardy’s future with the team, until after the game.
