NFL: Washington Redskins at Philadelphia EaglesCary Williams is standing by his old teammate.

The former Baltimore Ravens cornerback blasted the NFL on Thursday over its handling of the Ray Rice domestic violence situation.

“When they didn’t ask for the tape and they didn’t see that part of the video, obviously they dropped the ball with that situation,” Williams said, via Philly.com.

“… But I know that Ray Rice made a mistake, and I know him as a man and a teammate and a friend — and what he showed in that tape was not him.”

Williams, who spent four seasons in Baltimore before joining the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013, said Rice’s actions were completely out of character for the running back.

“For him to make a mistake like that and be crucified, in my opinion, it’s terrible, but that’s the world we live in,” Williams said. “It’s a shame that we have millions of people thinking that they’re perfect and they live the great life and they’ve done nothing wrong.

“I understand that hitting a woman is very, very disrespectful. It’s something I wouldn’t want my daughter to go through, either, especially the way that went down. We have to also understand that people make mistakes. I’m not condoning anything he’s done, but I can’t cast a stone. I’m sinful and I’ve made mistakes. I’m not perfect.”

The NFL initially suspended Rice for two games before suspending him indefinitely earlier this week.
