One fan more than got his money’s worth.
Tickets to Sunday’s game between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees at Fenway Park were in high demand, as it was an opportunity to properly send Derek Jeter into retirement after a long and illustrious major league career. But while the pregame ceremony and Jeter’s final moments certainly were worth the price of admission, one Yankees fan received even more than he bargained for in the form of a foul ball.
Jeter fouled off a 1-1 pitch from Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz in the third inning. It ended up being the second-to-last pitch Jeter ever saw, as he reached on an infield single one pitch later and exited the game to a raucous ovation. The fan who caught Jeter’s foul ball understandably hugged everyone and anyone in celebration of his new souvenir.
That’s one for the mantle.
