The Boston Red Sox spent big to acquire outfielder Rusney Castillo, but that doesn’t mean they’re going to rush him to the MLB.
Boston signed the Cuban defector to a seven-year, $72.5 million contract on Aug. 22, but Castillo hadn’t played organized baseball for a year and a half before his Gulf Coast League debut Sunday.
Castillo is expected to be called up to the big leagues at some point in September, but former Sox great Jim Rice says the call-up will serve more as a way for the outfielder to learn and observe.
