USATSI_7853794_168381014_lowresBUFFALO — Tuesday, Carolina Hurricanes center Jordan Staal broke his right leg in a preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres.

With 6:35 left in the third period, Staal was checked into the boards by Buffalo defenseman Josh Gorges. It appeared to be a clean hit, but unfortunately the result was not.

“I’m concerned for sure,” said Canes’ coach Bill Peters before learning the extent of the injury. “He’s a big piece of what we’re going to do moving forward.”

After the game, the four-time 20-goal scorer was seen using crutches with his right leg elevated.

Carolina’s general manager Ron Francis said there is no timetable on the injury, and Staal will be evaluated by team doctors Thursday.
