Charlie Weis, Rick LoumietThe Charlie Weis era at Kansas University was a disaster, and the school put Weis out of his misery Sunday.

Kansas announced Weis’ firing Sunday, ending his extremely unsuccessful tenure with the Jayhawks. Weis managed just a 6-22 record at Kansas that culminated with a listless 23-0 loss to the University of Texas on Saturday. Defensive coordinator Clint Bowen will take over as head coach on an interim basis.

“I normally do not favor changing coaches mid-season,” KU athletic director Sheahon Zenger said in a statement.  “But I believe we have talented coaches and players in this program, and I think this decision gives our players the best chance to begin making progress right away.

“I appreciate what Coach Weis did with several facets of our football program. But we have not made the on-the-field progress we believe we should.  I believe new leadership gives our coaches and players the best chance to make a fresh start.”

Weis was hired by Kansas in December of 2011. The former NFL offensive coordinator, who was very successful in that capacity, was making his second go-around as a college head coach. Weis spent five seasons with Notre Dame from 2005 through 2009. Weis’ time in South Bend started promising — with players leftover from the previous regime — but he struggled toward the end. Weis posted a 35-27 record with the Fighting Irish but was just 16-21 in his final three seasons.

Weis won just a combined four games in his first two full seasons with Kansas.
