BOSTON — Mike Napoli left Saturday night’s Red Sox-Toronto Blue Jays game between the second and third innings.

Napoli singled to open the home half of the second and later scored on a base hit by Will Middlebrooks but did not return to the field for the top of the third. Allen Craig, who began the game in right field, replaced Napoli at first base, and Daniel Nava entered as the new Red Sox right fielder.

The team has not yet announced the reason for Napoli’s departure, but the first baseman was seen having “a long chat” with the trainer before heading to the clubhouse, according to NESN’s Tom Caron.

UPDATE (9:39 p.m.): The Red Sox have announced that Napoli’s exit was due to illness.
