At the age of 34, Adam Dunn will get the chance to win the first World Series ring of his career.
Even he doesn’t achieve that goal, Dunn will probably hang his cleats up after this season.
Dunn was traded to the Oakland Athletics from the Chicago White Sox Sunday in exchange for minor league pitcher Nolan Sanburn.
While the first baseman and designated hitter could provide a boost to Oakland’s batting order this season, it’s likely he won’t be helping any team in 2015.
“This is probably going to be it,” Dunn told reporters Sunday, via ESPN. “I’ve been playing a long time and haven’t got this opportunity, so I’m going to try to make the most of it.”
Dunn hit his 20th home run of the season for the White Sox on Saturday, giving him 20 or more homers in 12 of his last 13 seasons. That kind of power is desperately needed in Oakland, as the A’s are averaging just 3.6 runs per game since they traded Yoenis Cespedes to the Boston Red Sox on July 31.
“It really feels like Opening Day,” Dunn said. “It’s a really good shot in the arm, for me especially. It’s pretty easy waking up this morning and knowing you’re going to be somewhere tomorrow that has a legitimate chance to do something that you’ve worked your entire career to do. Now I’m getting a chance.”
The A’s stand at 20 games over .500 at 78-58 as of Monday and trail the Los Angeles Angels by four games in the American League West.
