The Montreal Canadiens named four alternate captains on Monday instead of going the traditional route and selecting one captain and two or three alternates.

Defensemen P.K. Subban and Andrei Markov and forwards Max Pacioretty and Tomas Plekanec all will wear an “A” on their sweaters for the 2014-15 NHL season.

Starting goaltender Carey Price also will play a leadership role, though he won’t wear a letter.

Montreal’s captain role opened when Brian Gionta left the team in free agency to join the Buffalo Sabres in July. Markov has multiple years of experience in an alternate role with Montreal.

The New York Rangers, San Jose Sharks, Ottawa Senators and the Columbus Blue Jackets are among the teams still without a captain. The Sharks stripped Joe Thornton of the “C” a few weeks ago and will hold an open competition during training camp.
