Jadeveon Clowney has a bright future ahead of him, but his NFL career got off to an ominous start Sunday.

The Houston Texans’ rookie linebacker came up limping in the second quarter against the Washington Redskins after leaping in the air to try to deflect a Robert Griffin III pass.

Clowney didn’t return to the game and later was ruled out with a right knee injury. After the Texans’ 17-6 win, head coach Bill O’Brien told reporters that the early prognosis on Clowney’s knee was “good,” according to the Houston Chronicle’s John McClain.

As NFL Media’s Albert Breer reported later, however, that might not be the case.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter added to the bad news, reporting that the injury could be worse than originally expected.

If the injury is serious, it could be a huge blow for Houston, which selected Clowney with the first overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft. Clowney appeared to be living up to the hype in preseason, but a knee injury could be a huge setback for the promising rookie.

UPDATE (7:40 p.m.): According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, Houston’s fears have been confirmed.
