Darrelle Revis: Patriots’ Win Over Jets Wasn’t Personal Despite Ties

Eric Decker, Darrelle RevisFOXBORO, Mass. — Darrelle Revis hasn’t made the playoffs since 2010, so being on a team with a winning record means much more than a victory over his friends turned foes.

The New England Patriots cornerback played with the New York Jets from 2007 to 2012, but he said Thursday night’s 27-25 win wasn’t personal.

“No. A win is a win,” Revis said. “I’m excited for this team. We’re 5-2. The main goal for us was to win this game and be first in the conference, and we accomplished that as a team.”

Maybe Revis is just “doing his job” by playing to head coach Bill Belichick’s rules with the media and not creating headlines, but it appeared the All-Pro cornerback meant it when he said that he doesn’t hold a grudge against the Jets and his former head coach, Rex Ryan. Revis said he didn’t catch up with Ryan before or after the game, but he spoke to plenty of other former teammates and coaches.

“I’ve built a lot of relationships with a lot of staff members there, a lot of former teammates and coaches as well,” Revis said. “Still got the relationships. It’s competition, but at the same time, it’s life after football. I’ll probably still have those relationships when I’m done playing ball. It’s competition, but at the same time, it’s reality too after the game. You’ve still got respect for those guys. You still say your ‘Heys’ and, ‘How’s everything going. Good luck with the rest of the season.’ ”

Revis had relative success against Jets quarterback Geno Smith and wide receiver Eric Decker, allowing two catches on four targets for 42 yards. The 1-6 Jets likely are kicking themselves for not signing Revis when he was on the open market this offseason.
